Indoor pool plans: a general overview

This indoor pool design was done for a Comfort Inn hotel using our commercial pool design and blueprinting services.

Indoor pool planning requires integrating structural, mechanical, and design elements to manage humidity, structural loads, and aesthetic goals. Key considerations include reinforcing the foundation, installing robust HVAC/dehumidification systems, selecting moisture-resistant materials, and allocating space for equipment. It is best suited for new construction or major renovations.

Indoor Pool Usage:

Define the pool’s purpose (exercise/lap pool vs. relaxation) early to determine size, depth, features, components, and other requirements.

Indoor Pool Space & Layout:

Beyond the indoor pool itself, you must allocate space for a mechanical room (for filtration, heating, and sanitation equipment), walkways, and lounging areas that meet both your personal requirements and also satisfy the national and lcoal indoor pool building codes. Additionally, doors allowing access to the indoor pool area must open outward and away from the pool, must be clearly labeled as an exit (for commercial indoor pools) and must never be locked from the inside.

Structural Support & Site Prep:

Indoor pools add massive weight, requiring significant structural reinforcement. The pool should not be built directly against existing building walls to allow expansion and reduce compressive pressure and prevent stress to adjacent load bearing structures.

Indoor Pool Environmental Control:

A specialized HVAC and dehumidification system is essential to manage high humidity, prevent mold, and ensure comfort. Indoor pools may also make use of a vapor barrier cover, where an automatic pool cover reduces the outgassing of chlorine vapor while also providing safety from accidents or unintentional use.

Indoor Pool Design & Materials:

Use ADA approved non-slip, moisture-resistant materials like tiles or stone for the deck. Consider large windows or skylights for natural light, combined with artificial lighting for ambiance. All materials within the general area of an indoor pool should be pool rated and moisture resistant and must also be approved by local building code enforcement.

Indoor Pool Types:

Options range from customized in-ground gunite or shotcrete pools to simpler, pre-fabricated pool shells such as fiberglass or ICF.
